Hasbro is releasing a special Cheater’s Edition of the classic board game Monopoly this fall after an in-house study of about 2,000 people revealed that almost half break the rules during games.
In addition to the usual Community Chest and Chance cards, the new edition will feature 15 “Cheat Cards” that ask players to engage in questionable acts as they build empires and avoid bankruptcy.
They may still be forced to not pass Go and give up $200 – but now they’ll also be encouraged to skip spaces, move an opponent’s token, add buildings without paying for them and collect rent on another player’s property.
Even stealing from the bank will be allowed, which won’t be too difficult considering that “for the first time in Monopoly history, there is no designated banker,” Berkowitz said.
Players are in control of the bank on their turn, and pass it to the next player when their turn is over.
Good cheats are rewarded handsomely while those caught red-handed are punished. Going directly to jail will also include wearing a toy handcuff.
Other new rules, the first person to land on Pennsylvania Avenue gets it for free, and Atlantic Avenue can be bought for half its original value.
